Apr. 16th, 2013 08:51 pmI got this one scene in my mind, and had to write it out. It came with the following background: Light was out alone and was caught in an abandoned alley. The person who caught him wrapped his hand around the hilt of a sword, and then guided it into the assailant's own heart.
The sword turns out to be possessed by an evil spirit called Kira, who can - and will - force the current owner of the sword to kill people. It can kill by being driven into a sufficiently-detailed image of someone; high-quality photograph, portrait, even a statue (or wax figurine; this sword should never be allowed near Madame Tussaud's).
Kira decided that Light would be interesting to play with, so it forced its previous victim to die at Light's hands, passing on the curse to him. Light tries not to kill anyone for it, but Kira threatens to take over while he's asleep and kill his family. It even threatens to pass itself on to Sayu. Light daren't risk it, so he starts trying to find victims whose deaths he can live with.
L starts looking into this 'Phantom Slasher' who is targeting criminals. Light is putting less effort into not being found than he was in canon; the main reason he hasn't killed himself is because it would leave Kira free to find someone else to possess. He's resisting as much as he can without pushing Kira to go after someone close to him, and Kira is punishing him for it.
The scene is a take on the canon scene where L has put cameras throughout the Yagami household, and Soichiro is watching with him to protect his family's privacy as much as he can.
SCENE:
They watched, puzzled, as Light went through the house to make sure he was alone. Even Yagami had to see that his behaviour was suspicious.
Having confirmed that none of his family were around, Light headed for the bathroom, carrying a plastic bag from some convenience store. Yagami twitched in protest as the view switched to the camera in that room, but kept any protests he might have had to himself. He turned away as Light started to undress, apparently wanting to feel that he was giving his son some privacy.
L's startled reaction drew his eyes back to the screen. They both stared at the bandages hidden under Light's shirt, stained through in some places.
Light started the shower and began unwinding the bandages, grimacing as they stuck in a few places.
The wounds he was baring were all slices from a blade, none worse than a flesh wound. Judging from the angle and depth, L doubted any of them could have been self-inflicted. He was almost more interested in what was missing, though - there were no signs of defensive wounds. It looked as though Light had been intentionally stripping down (since none of his clothes were damaged) and standing still while someone cut him.
The unexpected display almost kept him from noticing the faces Light was pulling. Alone, with no one to pretend for, Light seemed to be reacting to a silent voice; looking angry and worried and scared by turns, with an underlying reluctance that gave his face a sullen cast.
Light stiffened, gritting his teeth. L and Yagami stared in disbelief as a new cut slowly opened directly beneath his nipple. Light's hands tightened into fists and started to shake as the cut finally ended, a new one immediately growing on his shoulderblade. He was still listening to that silent voice, shaking his head in refusal until he shouted, "I'll find someone! Just let me clean this up first!"
The older, scabbed-over wounds burst open, a malicious counterpart to what L was sure had been a 'no'.
Light hissed curses under his breath as he pulled a bottle of antiseptic from his bag and poured it over his chest and back, heedless of how much it must sting. He wound an entire roll of gauze around his torso and then added another roll of bandages to catch the blood that L and Yagami could see had already started to seep through, before pulling his shirt back on and heading for his room.
Whatever he was listening to obviously hadn't stopped harassing him, since he snarled as he opened the door, "That won't happen." To his secret observers' bewilderment, he turned on his computer and set up his printer. "You're not getting them." His fingers flew over the keys with an ease that could only come from familiarity as he hacked into the police system, calling up and setting to print a picture of an escaped convict who was responsible for a number of murders. "Because I won't let you!"
The barely-hidden panic in Light's voice made L frown. Whoever (whatever? Something had cut Light open in the bathroom...) Light was talking to seemed to be threatening people close to him; probably his family. Knowing what the silent voice was saying would be an immense help in his attempts to solve this case, but L couldn't think of a means of finding out.
Light snatched up the picture as soon as it was printed and stuck it to some thread so that it was hanging in midair, then went to his schoolbag and pulled out a sword.
Yagami spluttered.
"Here," Light hissed at the sword furiously. "I'm doing it, so shut up and leave me alone." His panic grew at whatever he heard in response. "I don't care, Kira! I'm not killing innocents for you!" He turned and slashed through the picture's throat, then dropped the sword as if he couldn't bear to hold it any longer.
L set up a search for the person whose picture Light had put up. He already knew what it would find - another dead body, with the throat sliced open.
He wondered where he should start looking for information about 'Kira'.
